We come from a state and a city that's very proud of its beer heritage, so it’s no surprise that Milwaukee has its own Beer Week.
Modeled after similar Beer Weeks in New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Austin, TX, Milwaukee Beer Week has expanded from what had been a trade show for industry insiders to a week-long series of events. Last year, beer tastings and dinners were held at a host of bars, restaurants and other venues around Milwaukee as a way to increase awareness and enhance beer knowledge and appreciation for the ever-growing craft beer industry.
Last month, readers were invited to vote in the inaugural Best of the Milwaukee Web Awards, which was put on by Shepherd Express to honor the community of creative Web- and social media-minded Milwaukeeans that contribute to our vibrant online culture.
On Tuesday evening, the winners were announced at the first-ever awards ceremony. Selected entirely by readers, the diverse list of nominees included well-designed websites, major online publications, independent blogs, as well as charismatic individuals and influential businesses that play a role on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.
Between the Bars was nominated for Best Nightlife Site, which was quite a shocker. Like, WTF? I actually didn’t find out that I was a contender until Wednesday morning – otherwise I probably would have showed up to the awards event.
I didn’t win, but, in this case, I'm OK with being a loser. To be a runner-up in what I would consider a tough category, and to even be nominated along with creative and vastly popular sites like OnMilwaukee.com (Best Nightlife Site winner), I have to say, I’m quite honored. I don't know how many sites were in the running or how many votes I got, but it was enough to get recognition, which is all I can really ask for.
To keep Between the Bars – and you – up-to-date, this weekly post provides a compilation of both the amusing and the significant (mostly the amusing) local stories from the last few days that I've found by keeping a sharp eye on the local newswire. Enjoy the wealth of information, dear readers. You deserve it.
• The Crew was swept by the Nationals over the weekend. At least they can relax a bit now. Oh, wait, they have a series against Philly starting today.
• The former Rip Tide space, 649 E. Erie St., is under renovation and will reopen soon as Milwaukee Sail Loft. Rumor has it the new seafood restaurant will open on May 1, says OnMilwaukee.
• The Shops Of Grand Avenue are getting two new stores: a locally owned women’s shoe store and a new Sprint store, reports the Journal Sentinel. In two months, I will report that these and two additional stores are closing.
The breadth of prior knowledge I had about mummies was probably equivalent to what I knew about the embalming process. Very little.
All mummies are from Egypt, they’re wrapped in bandages, and if you dare to open their tomb you’re pretty much screwed. Or so I thought. This excess of misinformation was bestow on me at an impressionable and early age when I was entertained by R. L. Stine’s horror fiction novels Goosebumps and Saturday morning reruns of Scooby Doo.

• Don't give up on the Brewers just yet! After a rough start to the season, they are back at .500 after completing a 5-2 home stand. The team redeemed itself against the Braves with a 3-1 series win, and finished 2-1 in the series against the hated Cubs. The Brewers are off today, and begin a new series in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. Go Brewers!

• Brewers fans tried to forget the not-so-spectacular series against the Cincinnati Reds (they swept us) as they packed the parking lots of Miller Park for the home opener yesterday. Sadly, the Brewers lost again, though not many game-goers actually remember the final score. If you ask them how many beer bongs they did, however, I bet they could tell you.
